Success Story: Jimmie (Veteran Programs)
For more than 21 years, Jimmie served in the U.S. Army as a human resources specialist. As he contemplated his transition to civilian employment, he knew he wanted a career that would allow him to make use of his previous education and experience.
“Although I knew many of the skills I had were transferable, understanding the depth of how to apply them was one of my major goals,” he said. “That’s why I decided to seek out organizations that could help me.” Jimmie found that support in Goodwill’s Operation GoodJobs.
“I wanted to continue my role in human resources. My Goodwill case manager connected me with a network of specialists who helped me with resume writing and interviewing. They helped me get out of my comfort zone.
Jimmie attended a networking and hiring event for transitioning military. More than 70 local employers and support organizations were there. “I put on my best outfit for job searching…and my best smile. As I look back now, I realize that every employer there wanted to make a difference in the lives of us service members.”
Jimmie secured an internship with Washington State and soon found employment as a human resources consultant for the Department of Commerce in Olympia.
“I have two words to sum up my transition experience: humbled and grateful! Because of Operation: GoodJobs, resume writing and interviewing became easier. Now I share what I’ve learned with other transitioning veterans.”
